Love in Kampala
Lindsay and Joe’s story started as colleagues and then friends. In the summer of 2019, they were both working in Washington, DC for a small non-profit advocating for clean water in the developing world. Joe had just finished grad school in Milwaukee. Lindsay had moved to the city the year before from San Francisco. They met over beers for team happy hours, remaining strictly professional.
But when their boss told them they’d be taking a work trip to Uganda, just the two of them, Lindsay had to play it cool. Two weeks, 12 hours a day, together. Halfway through the trip, it was clear there was chemistry. Watching the Tottenham Hotspurs over Thai food, curled up in a rainstorm in the northern countryside, they fell for each other in this dream world. Back in DC, their relationship evolved from a brief international romance to something more real. Four years, two cats, and many adventures later (to Donner Lake and beyond), Joe proposed to Lindsay at the National Arboretum in November 2023.
